Prof. Maria Siemionow has joined the Council of the Medical Research Agency

Today (24/10/2022) in Washington, D.C., during a delegation to the U.S., Health Minister Adam Niedzielski appointed Prof. Maria Siemionow - a world-class scientist, director of microsurgery training at the University of Illinois at Chicago - to the Council of the Medical Research Agency.

It is a great honor for us to have such distinguished scientists of recognized achievements and world renown join the Council of the Medical Research Agency. Thanks to people like Professor Siemionow, the Agency will be able to undertake the most up-to-date global research and implement grants for innovative therapies at the highest level. This is a valuable support for Polish science," comments Medical Research Agency President Radoslaw Sierpinski, MD, PhD.

Prof. Maria Siemionow

Prof. Siemionow, a world-renowned scientist and microsurgeon, is a professor of orthopedics and director of microsurgery training at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He specializes in microsurgery, hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and transplantation. He is a pioneer of the new tolerance technology under development in transplantation and cell therapy for nerve and muscle regeneration. Dr. Siemionow was president of the American Society for Reconstructive Transplantation, the International Hand and Composite Tissue Allotransplantation Society and the American Society for Peripheral Nerve. She is a member of the Warrior Restoration Consortium's research and industry team, developing clinical therapies and new technologies for wounded soldiers within the US Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM II). She has received numerous honors, including high recognition as principal investigator for the world's first face transplant protocol; in 2008, she led the team that performed the first total face transplant in the United States. She has authored more than 400 scientific publications. She has edited three plastic surgery textbooks, two popular science books and more than 140 book chapters. Prof. Siemionov has been awarded: Polish Order of Merit, Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta by the President of the Republic of Poland; the American Society of Plastic Surgery Award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Research, the Casimir Funk Scientific Award, the Heritage Award from the Polish American Congress, and the Golden Otis Award. Prior to her appointment at UIC, she was scientific director of plastic surgery and director of microsurgery training at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Plastic Surgery.
