Joint projects of MRA and National Institutes of Health in the USA

Prevention of cancers and cardiac diseases, innovation implementation in medicine, organisation of the health care system and joint clinical research - these were the subjects discussed during the meetings of the Medical Research Agency with health care institutions in the USA. The talks were held at the University of Texas - MD Anderson Cancer Center, with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Some key researchers, who shared their experience in the area of conducting research and educational projects as well as clinical research took part in the meetings with the Medical Research Agency.

The researchers touched upon the subject of prevention of cancers and cardiac diseases, models of innovation implementation in medicine, organisation of the health care system and joint clinical research. An agreement on cooperation in the area of new technologies in cancer treatment signed on Friday with the University of Texas - MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, is an important step towards development of Polish medicine.

Talks with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and also with the representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) evolved around American experiences with optimisation of processes of innovation implementation in medicine. Also representatives of key Polish institutions in the field of introduction of new medicinal products and medical devices to the Polish market - the Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff System (Pol. Agencja Oceny Technologii Medycznych i Taryfikacji - AOTMiT) and the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products (Pol. Urząd Rejestracji Produktów Leczniczych, Wyrobów Medycznych i Produktów Biobójczych - URPL) participated in the meeting.

Some other talks, conducted with the National Institute of Health (NIH), including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Institute of Allergy (NIA), and also with Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, focused on the issues of joint clinical research, whose part is supposed to cover Polish patients.

"Close cooperation with partners from the leading American centres gives us opportunity of getting access to the best clinical and research practices. Polish scientists are offered a huge opportunity of development and access to knowledge, experience and scientific resources of American institutions, which may translate directly to the well-being of patients" - sums up Radosław Sierpiński, the President of the Medical Research Agency.
