MRA will donate PLN 100 million for research in the area of rare diseases

The Medical Research Agency launches the first programme in Central and Eastern Europe worth PLN 100 million for research and development activities, which will be available to patients affected by a disease considered rare or ultra rare.

These diseases are very rare, genetic disorders with chronic and often severe course, usually appearing already in childhood. Rare diseases represent a significant health and social care challenge, affecting 6-8% of each country's population. A disease is considered rare if it affects no more than 1 in 2,000 people. Diseases with an incidence of 1 in 50,000 or less, are rare diseases. Taking into account Polish demographic data, it is estimated that this problem affects 2. 3 - 3 million people.

The main objective of the programme is to support projects concerning the development of new therapeutic procedures in the area of rare diseases within the framework of non-commercial clinical trials. Thanks to the support of ABM, it will be possible to increase patients' access to comprehensive, multi-specialist and, above all, innovative diagnostics, care and therapy.
